Understanding the purpose and meaning of education in the 21st century: Duoethnographies from multiple perspectives of educational learners and leaders

Using duoethnography, the purpose of this research is to engage a range of learners, teachers, and leaders in a dialogic examination of the purpose and meaning of education in the 21st century. The question driving this research is: How does dialogic engagement in and understanding of education give meaning to our experiences with and of 21st century learning and leading? Situating this research in the context of 21st century leading and learning is a response to calls from Ministries of Education, educational scholars, and educators seeking new ways to understand education and learning (Sanford, Starr & Mimik, in press).

According to Change Learning, an interactive website launched to share information and host discussions about meaningful educational change, 21st century learning is a compelling response to the demands of Canadian education in today’s world. “To effectively deal with the challenges of the 21st century, we must transform the way we understand and structure education in this country — re-thinking the model based on up-to-date information and current world realities” (www.changelearning.ca, 2014, para. 1).
