Dr. Tyler Churchward-Venne appointed as William Dawson Scholar by McGill

Published: 1 June 2018

Tyler Churchward-Venne, Assistant Professor with our Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE), has been named as a William Dawson Scholar by McGill University.

This prestigious award recognizes a scholar developing into an outstanding and original researcher of world-class caliber who is poised to become a leader in his or her field, similar to that of a CRC Tier 2 chair holder. Founded in 2000 in parallel with the federal Canada Research Chair (CRC) program,  the William Dawson Scholar award recognizes the outstanding research contributions of tenure-track academic staff members at the University.

The focus of Dr. Churchward-Venne’s research program is the in-vivo regulation of human skeletal muscle protein metabolism. He studies how nutrition and exercise impact the synthesis and breakdown of proteins in muscle and promote healthy muscle metabolism across the lifespan. Currently, his research is aimed at better understanding the mechanisms of skeletal muscle loss, as occurs with aging and muscle disuse, and identifying optimal exercise and nutritional approaches to protect and restore skeletal muscle mass and strength. His research program is currently funded by McGill University and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Dr. Churchward-Venne is a member of the McGill Research Centre for Physical Activity and Health (PATH), and Director of KPE's Exercise Metabolism and Nutrition Research Laboratory.
