Three KPE students among Martlet Foundation's 2017 honourees

The Martlet Foundation's annual general meeting was a cause for celebration among students and faculty in our Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE). Of 11 students university-wide who received scholarships and awards, three study with our KPE department. Two of these were winners of the prestigious Jean Béliveau Award.

McGill Redmen hockey team captain Nathan Chiarlitti, a master's student majoring in Exercise Physiology; and volleyball starlet Marjolaine Ste-Marie, master's student in Physical Therapy, were recipients of the 2017 Jean Béliveau Award. Béliveau skated for 18 seasons with the Canadiens from 1953-1971. He was a member of 10 Stanley Cup-winning teams as a player and seven more as an executive with the team. Off the ice, Béliveau supported charities in Quebec and throughout Canada.  In 2006, McGill conferred an honorary doctor of laws degree upon Béliveau in recognition of his athletic accomplishments, his leadership both on and off the ice, and as a tireless philanthropist. established to recognize outstanding student-athletes for leadership in the community

McGill Martlets hockey standout Sidonie Chard took home the Dorothy Nichol Award, presented annually on the basis of "academic achievement and contributions to extra-curricular activities in athletics." An assistant and associate professor at McGill's Macdonald College campus in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue from 1952 to 1970, Nichol became one of the first female directors of women's athletics, holding the position for 15 years, from 1955 until 1970. In 1999, Professor Dorothy Nichol was inducted as a builder to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame.
