Gerald B. Price Memorial Travel Awards

The Gerald B. Price Memorial Travel Awards were established in 2004, by family and friends, to honour Dr. Gerald B. Price’s memory and his many contributions as Director of the Division of Experimental Medicine.

Dr. Gerald B. Price became Director of the Division of Experimental Medicine in 1995 and served in this capacity until June of 2003 when he suddenly and unexpectedly passed away as a result of a heart attack.

He is well remembered by his many colleagues and the students whose lives he touched.

Application and Procedures (for both Gerald B. Price and GREAT Awards)

Three (3) travel award competitions will take place each year.  The date by which a student must apply is determined by the date of the proposed conference. The deadlines by which a completed application must be received are as follows:

1.    June 30th, for conferences which will take place anytime between the upcoming September 1st and December 31st;

2.   October 31st, for conferences which will take place anytime between the upcoming January 1st and April 30th;

3.   February 28th, for conferences which will take place anytime between the upcoming May 1st and August 31st.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure that all required documents are sent via e-mail to experimental.medicine [at] mcgill.ca by the appropriate deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Purpose and Objectives of the Awards

These awards will be used to enhance the graduate training of students in the graduate program in Experimental Medicine (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) by providing travel funds for the presentation of a scholarly contribution at a scientific conference.

Source of Funds

These awards derive from the income generated by an endowment fund established in 2004 in memory of Dr. Gerald B. Price, former Director of the Division of Experimental Medicine and member of the Department of Medicine and the McGill Cancer Centre, as well as from monies set aside by the University for this purpose.

Value of Awards

For Remote Conferences: Direct costs to attend the conference (e.g., registration fees, abstract submission fees) will be reimbursed following the submission of receipts.

For In-Person Conferences: Award recipients will be reimbursed for the amount spent to attend the conference for which they received the award, up to a maximum of $1,250 CAD. The awards may be used to pay for travel, conference fees, food and hotel costs, etc., at the recipient’s discretion. Expenditure must be justified with receipts. Covid-related costs (Covid tests, quarantine costs, etc.) cannot be reimbursed by the GREAT travel awards.

Supervisor Contribution

The recipient’s supervisor is expected to provide any additional travel support necessary to enable the student to attend the conference, up to a maximum of $650.00.

Eligibility

At the time of application, applicants must be registered as full-time graduate students in Experimental Medicine (or additional session students, working full-time on their degree).

Applicants must be presenting a paper or poster at a scholarly meeting which falls within the specified time period of the competition. Students may apply for a travel award prior to receiving confirmation of acceptance of their paper or poster, but must submit proof of acceptance before receiving the travel reimbursement.

Applications for support to attend conferences which have already taken place will not be considered.

Required Documents

  • One (1) copy of the application form bearing original signatures where required.
  • An abstract of the paper to be presented (1 page maximum).

Evidence of acceptance to present a paper or poster (copy of letter of acceptance or of conference program). If not available at time of application, the proof of acceptance must be submitted as soon as possible to the departmental office. Payment will not be issued until this documentation is received.

Attribution of Awards

The number of awards attributed will be dependent on the amount of funding available. The awards themselves will be attributed by a random draw among all eligible applicants.

Announcement of Results

E-mails announcing competition results will be sent to all applicants approximately 2 weeks after the deadline.

Payment

The award is paid as a reimbursement of travel expenses, and this only AFTER the conference has taken place (in order to be assured that the awardee has attended the conference). Recipients of the award must provide the Department with receipts via email (totaling as close as possible to the amount of the award) in order to obtain the full payment of the award.
