Message from the Chair: April 2025

If you are a clinician in the McGill Family Medicine network and have time in your schedule to add some clinical supervision of residents and students in one of our teaching sites, we have many openings! Please send an email to: chair.fammed [at] mcgill.ca. Similarly, if you are interested in teaching small group sessions to medical students, let us know.

Last night, the Dr. Hirsh Rosenfeld Distinguished Public Lecture in Family Medicine took place and for this special 50th anniversary edition of the Department, we collaborated with the St. Mary’s Research Centre. I hope many of you were able to attend Dr. Isabelle Leblanc’s talk entitled Too Much Pain, Doctor! : recognizing and contextualizing cultural expressions of pain. For those who missed it, the recording will be available soon.

This month for our 50th anniversary, we are celebrating some of our founding members as Family Medicine heroes. These physicians have played a fundamental role not only in the success of our Department but also in the field of Family Medicine as a whole:

  • Dr. Michael Klein: A Trailblazer for Family Medicine and Maternity Care. Read more.
  • Dr. Mark Yaffe: Pioneering Excellence in Elder and Mental Health Care. Read more.

Congratulations to all three of you!

Many faculty members received awards over the past month:

  • Prof. Alayne Adams was awarded the Jonathan Campbell Meakins and Family Memorial Fellowship by the IHSE. Read more.
  • Prof. Tracie Barnett was honoured with a King Charles III Coronation Medal. Read more.
  • Dr. Rhian M. Touyz was honoured at the Bravo gala. Read more.

Other significant events:

  • Val d’Or matched two residents to start in July 2025 in the second iteration of the CaRMS match.
  • Palliative Care McGill held a tremendously successful National Grand Rounds Lecture with Jim Mulcahy. Read more.
  • The Department organized a Sugar Shack breakfast. Thank you to the Wellness Committee for putting this event together!

Coming up on May 30 is our 50th anniversary year closing event: Academic Day, which will be a combination of Tannenbaum Family Medicine Resident Research Day, the Family Medicine Graduate Student Symposium and the McGill Primary Care Practice-based Research Network (PBRN) Day. I look forward to seeing many of you there!

Enjoy the warmer and longer days of spring.

As ever,

Marion
