In memoriam: Geeta Gupta

Colleagues and friends were saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Geeta Gupta on April 15, 2024 in Kolkata, India. Dr. Gupta completed her medical studies in India and in England. She subsequently practiced family medicine for many years in a community-based office in the Côte-des-Neiges/NDG borough and on the West Island of Montreal, where she was heavily engaged in perinatal care. In this latter activity, the annual volume of deliveries that she performed commonly exceeded those of many of her obstetrical colleagues. As such she was a valued member of the Department of Family Medicine at McGill University and was an appreciated teacher within the Family Medicine Centre of the Montreal General Hospital, and later within the St. Mary’s Hospital Family Medicine Centre. She supervised and mentored several generations of family medicine residents with great passion, and role modelled care, empathy, and compassion. She will be remembered for her devotion to, and advocacy for, minority and ethnic communities during an era when such concerns received little attention.
