Research Seminar: Mystery of the Blue Highway with Jack Westfall

Friday, September 22, 2023 12:30to13:30
Price:
Free

In the era of patient-oriented research, the Mystery is: why it is so difficult for researchers to ask clinical questions that matter to patients and to translate knowledge in a way that clinicians can meet patient needs in practice? In this talk, Dr. Jack Westfall not only unpacks the problem but shows how practice-based research networks and community-based participatory research can respond in meaningful ways for patients, clinicians, communities – and yes – even researchers. “Blue Highway” invokes the metaphor of old highway maps of America, where the main routes were red and the back roads blue. Dr. Westfall will encourage researchers to explore the off-the-beaten-track of practice-based research and give examples of how rural communities can leverage research knowledge and know-how to make a meaningful impact not only for patients but on entire communities. McGill DFM’s own Dr. Ann MacAulay, founder of Participatory Research at McGill (PRaM), has been very influential in Jack’s work, and we are honoured to learn from what he has learned!

This seminar is being organized by the McGill Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN).

Research Seminar Series

Every month, a research seminar is held at the Department of Family Medicine, where we feature visiting researchers from other universities, or departments, and showcase the work of our own researchers. The seminars are attended by our graduate students, researchers and clinicians, and are open to the whole McGill community. They address a wide range of research methods and topics relevant to primary health care, and provide opportunity for interaction and exchange with the speakers. The Research Seminars are Fridays at around noon.
