What to pack

Take note that your packing list may different, based on if you are living in a McGill Residence or in off-campus housing. Make sure to check with Residences to see if certain items (e.g., kettles and other appliances) are allowed in your particular room/apartment.

Health & Hygiene

  • Medical files
  • Medications (prescription and over-the-counter)
  • Health Insurance Card
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Shower caddy
  • Shower shoes/slippers
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, sunscreen, etc.)
  • Toiletry appliances (hair dyer, hair straightener, razor, etc.)
  • Supplies to do a basic cleaning/dusting of your space

Clothing & Laundry

  • Casual wear (t-shirts, shirts, pants, etc.)
  • Dress clothes (for formal activities, interviews, presentations, etc.)
  • Raincoat and umbrella
  • Scarf, mittens, winter hat, winter coat, winter boots (Invest in comfortable, durable, protective winter wear! Wait until arriving in Montreal to purchase these items, if good-quality winter wear is not available in your current location.)
  • Hangers
  • Laundry basket or bag, laundry detergent, dryer sheets etc.


  • Pillows, pillowcases, sheets, comforter/duvet, blankets (confirm the size of your bed first)
  • Plates, silverware, and mugs/cups
  • Pots and pans
  • Dish soap and dish towels

Personal Items

  • Sporting/health equipment
  • Photos/decoration
  • Books/eBook
  • Computer, camera, and other electronics
  • Basic multi-use tool and multi-head screwdriver
  • Alarm clock (if you're not a fan of repurposing your phone)
  • Headphones/speakers (remember to keep it quiet for your neighbours, though!)
  • Fan
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Extension cords, surge protectors
  • Wall decorations, photos, etc. (bring reusable adhesive putty (e.g., Sticky Tack) too, since you are not allowed to puncture the walls in Residences)

Things to double-check if you're allowed to bring (depending on your housing situation)

  • Pets of any kind (even a fish... glug glug)
  • Extra small furniture
  • Large speakers
  • Candles or incense
  • Small cooking appliances (e.g., kettle, coffeemakers, toaster)
  • Your own mini-fridge
