FALL SESSION COURSES

FRSL 209
FRANÇAIS ORAL ÉLÉMENTAIRE: SANTÉ ET SERVICES SOCIAUX

This course is designed for students from a variety of disciplines (health and social work) to help them interact with clients despite their basic level of French language skills. At the end of this course, students will have improved their basic vocabulary in French for health sciences and social work, and they will develop sufficient communication skills to be able to talk briefly about a case study and make recommendations to patients, among other aspects. A review of basic linguistic elements - lexical, grammatical and stylistic - used in professional communication will also be done. The course pack is distributed free of charge.

FRSL 219
FRANÇAIS INTERMÉDIAIRE 1 ET 2: DIÉTÉTIQUE ET NUTRITION
3 credits

This course is designed for future dietitians and nutritionists at an intermediate level, but not French speaking, who would like to improve their French oral and written skills while studying specialized vocabulary related to dietetics and nutrition. This course will help prepare them for practicums or work placements (stages) in French speaking environments as well as for their professional exams. Topics of discussion, grammar points, exercises and activities focus on developing the necessary French skills for these future professionals to carry out their tasks as dietitians and nutritionists. This course is offered at the Macdonald Campus. The course pack is distributed free of charge.

FRANÇAIS ÉCRIT EN CONTEXTE 1 : SANTÉ ET SERVICES SOCIAUX

By the end of this course, successful students will be able to understand and produce written and oral texts which have a connection with health sciences in an upper intermediate level of French (B2 of the CEFR). Students will be capable of producing a simple professional-patient interview, as well as a simple case history (chart) in French. Students will also be able to broaden their specific vocabulary and medical terminology in French. This course is offered to students of any health sciences field and social work. The course pack is distributed free of charge.

Students will be capable of producing a more complex professional-patient interview, giving instructions to patients, explaining a treatment, as well as writing a case history (chart) in French. Students will also be able to broaden their specific vocabulary and medical terminology in French. This course is offered to students of any health sciences field and social work. FRANÇAIS ORAL INTERMÉDIAIRE 2 ET AVANCÉ: SANTÉ ET SERVICES SOCIAUX

Oral communication practice in the form of exercises, discussions and role-play, with an emphasis on specialized vocabulary and useful sentence structures. This course helps students whose written French skills are not as fluent as their oral skills. They will improve their ability to choose correct grammar and linguistic terms. After studying model texts, students will write similar ones using appropriate sentence structure and vocabulary in preparation for written communication with professional colleagues as well as for the French exam administered by l’Office québécois de la langue française. The course pack is distributed free of charge.

1. Are these courses credited?

Some of these courses are credited, specifically all those whose code start by FRSL, which are 3-credit courses. The courses starting by the code FIGF are 0-credit courses, and thus free of charge.

2. Who can take these courses?

Students who are enrolled in:

  • Any programme of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
  • Any programme of the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences
  • Dietetics, Nutrition, Social Work and Psychology.

3. Are these courses free?

4. What is the schedule for these courses?

5. When is the deadline for registration in these courses?

Since these courses are regular elective courses offered by the French Language Centre, it is the same as the add/drop period of elective courses. This includes the FIGF code 0-credit courses.

6. Are these courses online or in-person?

Since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, all the French for health and social work courses are back in person.

7. Where are the French for health courses offered?

Six of the seven courses are offered in the downtown campus. Only the courses specific for Dietetics students (FRSL 329-002) is offered at the Macdonald campus.

8. Can I take these courses if I am a beginner?

Unfortunately, there is no beginner course in specific French for health and social work. We expect students to have a minimum of an A2 level to be able to join the lowest level course. We encourage beginner students to contact the French Language Centre and enrol in a beginner level course with them. Once students have completed FRSL 102, FRSL 105 or higher, they can contact us to consult their eligibility for the French for health and social work courses.

9. Do these courses prepare students for the OQLF exams?

Yes. One of the objectives of these courses is to prepare students for the OQLF exams of the different health care programmes. However, students having completed FRSL 330 and/or FIGF PMCO have more chances of passing the OQLF exam of their professional order. In addition to these courses, there are OQLF Exam Preparation Workshops organized with the different programmes to help students prepare for the OQLF exams. In these workshops, students have the possibility of practicing with a mock exam similar to the ones given at the OQLF.
