Dr. Milan K. Sen Travel Award in Global Health Surgery Application form

The Fall 2017 round for the Dr. Milan K. Sen Travel Award in Global Health Surgery is now closed.

Winners will be announced at Global Health Night.

Established in 2016 by Dr. Milan Sen, BSc 1994, MDCM 1998, to provide travel support for undergraduate medical students interested in global surgery within the Faculty of Medicine who are pursuing research project overseas in under resourced areas in the world, or among underserved populations in Canada or U.S.A. (e.g. the Indigenous populations). Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs in consultation with the Centre for Global Surgery at the McGill University Health Centre. Deadline

Deadline for applications is October 4, 2017, 11:59PM. Your application must be submitted through the form below.

Each application must include:

 1.       CV

2.       A one-page single spaced letter of intent including answers to the following questions:

 - Why are you interested in Global Surgery/ Global Health?

- How would this experience link to your future studies/work?

-If you were selected, which specific area of our program would you like to work on ? ( for more info on our program you can visit our website www.cglobalsurgery.com).

General Instructions and Eligibility Requirements

  1. Only McGill students, postdocs, and residents are eligible for GHP travel awards.
  2. No program cost/fees will be covered. Travel support for conferences will not be supported.
  3. Travel cannot be completed before the application deadline for the awards (except for the Chan Prize in the fall).
  4. Student travel to a country with a DFATD-3 or higher warning is not encouraged and will not be funded by any of these awards. To view the latest travel advisories click here.
  5. Travel Awards are non-transferable to another student or trainee.
  6. If a student is unable to travel to the destination for which the application was submitted they must contact the Global Health Programs as soon as they know. The situation will have to be evaluated on a case by case basis to determine if the award can be deferred, used for an elective in another location, or must be declined.
  7. A student or trainee is eligible for only one award from GHP for the same trip.
  8. Students must be registered with McGill as either a full or part-time student, postdoc or resident for the entire duration of their trip. Criteria for the Bubbie and Nanny Global Health Travel Award and the McGill International TB Centre Travel Awards may differ slightly.

As a condition of the award requirements include the following:

  1. Candidates must complete the mandatory Pre-departure orientation by the time travel starts (Medical residents are not required to attend at this time).
  2. A poster presentation of research or activities for which the travel award was given must be presented on Global Health Night (November 2018)
  3. Medical students must apply for the Dr. Yuk Chan Ma and Dr. Yuen Kok Chan Prize in Multicultural and International Medicine the fall following your travel, if you are not a graduating student.
  4. A report about your project must be submitted within 6 weeks of your return.
