Islamic Studies (M.A.)

Program Description

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Islamic Studies (Thesis) offered by the Institute of Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Arts is a research-intensive program that emphasizes contemporary and advanced learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in critical thinking, literature review, and research dissemination to either continue their studies or pursue professional opportunities.

The program may also be taken with a Gender and Women's Studies option where students focus their coursework on gender and women’s studies, and issues in feminist research and methods. The student’s master’s thesis must be on a topic centrally relating to issues of gender or women’s studies.

  • The Institute is strongly international atmosphere and low student-faculty ratio provide an opportunity for face-to-face exchange among professors and students at various levels;
  • The Institute regularly invites prominent scholars in the field of Islamic Studies to give lectures;
  • Courses are offered in the Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Urdu languages;
  • The Institute houses the Islamic Studies Library (ISL) which is considered one of North America's largest collections in Islamic Studies;
  • With the approval of the student's supervisor, courses may be taken with Institute of Islamic Studies affiliated Faculty members in other departments (i.e., History, Anthropology, Political Science) to can count toward the program's coursework requirements.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
