Social Work (M.S.W.)

Program Description

The Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) in Social Work (Non-Thesis) offered by the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Arts is a course-based program that emphasizes career-focused and innovative learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in critical thinking, program development, and communication to pursue professional opportunities (or potentially continue their studies).

The program may also be taken with a Gender & Women's Studies option so students may pursue some of their coursework to focus on gender, sexuality, feminist, and women's studies and issues in feminist research and methods.

Keywords: advanced clinical practice, counselling, child and family, community-based practice; international development, advocacy, disability, aging, immigrants and refugees.

Unique Program Features

  • Student develop critical and innovative approaches to practice competence and to policy analysis such that they may contribute to both established social services and to new and less developed areas of service provision;
  • The program is comprised of coursework and a field placement. The programs course offerings cover two areas of practice: Practice in Individuals, Families, and Groups, and International, Community and Policy Practice;
  • The School's research interests include child welfare, families, violence, sexuality, aging, social theory, social work practice, and methodology;
  • The School of Social Work is a member of the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) and the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE);
  • The program is accredited by the CASWE.

  • A Bachelor's of Social Work (BSW) degree with a minimum 3.2 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
