Communicating Science to the Media

"Scientists are from Saturn; Media are from Mars - How to bridge those worlds and effectively communicate your research"

 

Join us for a lively talk from Jim Handman (Executive Director, Science Media Centre of Canada) as he explores how the conflicting cultures of media and science can create challenges for effective communication. Using engaging audio examples, Jim will show what works (and what doesn't!) so as to help scientists get their messages across to journalists and the broader public. 

 

The talk will be held on McGill's downtown campus on Thursday, June 20, from 2 pm - 3 pm. Registrants will receive the location in a confirmation email.

 

Speaker's Biography: Jim Handman is the current Executive Director of the Science Media Centre of Canada. For the past 15 years, he has been the Executive Producer of the CBC Radio science program, Quirks & Quarks. During that time, he has won numerous prizes and honours for science journalism, including the Walter Sullivan Award from the AGU; the Science Writing Award from the American Institute of Physics; as well as many awards from the Canadian Science Writers Association.

Jim has also taught broadcast journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto, conducted workshops for the Graduate Science Communications program at Laurentian University in Sudbury, and taught radio at the National University of Rwanda. He was also a Science-Writer-in-Residence at the journalism school of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2014, he was the CanWest-Global Fellow in Journalism at Western University.
