Writing Effective Teaching Statements

Many applications for academic jobs now require a statement of teaching philosophy.  This document can be challenging to write if you don't have much teaching experience or because it can seem quite different from more familiar forms of academic writing.  This hands-on workshop will help participants to think and write about their teaching philosophy, strengths as an instructor, and their goals in the classroom.

Participants will learn strategies for:

  • Using examples to create a concrete and convincing statement
  • Striking a balance between discussing past and future teaching experiences
  • Writing in a way that is both personal and professional

You will have the opportunity to begin drafting your own teaching statement and receiving constructive feedback during the workshop.

Danielle Barkley holds a Ph.D. from McGill University.  She has taught courses through the McGill Writing Centre, the Faculty of Management, the Department of English and at Bishop's University.  She has also provided writing and consultation services to the McGill Career Centre.

The workshop will be held on McGill’s downtown campus on Tuesday, September 29, 1pm to 3pm. Registrants will receive the workshop location in a confirmation email.
