Beech is a large and stately tree with smooth grey bark. Standing in a forest of them might make you feel like you are surrounded by elephants! The leaves have a smooth, papery texture, which might be due to the trees’ use of silicon as one of its nutrients. The winter buds are long, slender and pointed; and together with the bark make this tree easy to identify even in the winter.
