Congratulations to M. Max Hamon! He just received the 2019 Wilson Book Prize for his first book The Audacity of His Enterprise: Louis Riel and the Métis Nation That Canada Never Was, 1840–1875, published by McGill-Queen’s University Press in early 2020.

It is rare for a recently minted Ph.D. (McGill 2018) to revise and publish a dissertation quickly. It is even rarer to win a major prize immediately!

M. Max Hamon’s book revises the long-standing portrayal of Louis Riel (1844-1885), an iconic figure in Canadian history best known for his roles in the Red River Resistance of 1869 and the Northwest Resistance of 1885, as a rebel. Together with the Métis people he led, he was much more involved in the making of the Canadian state than historians have previously acknowledged.

Congratulations!
