We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. William Foulkes as the Chief of the Division of Medical Genetics in the Jewish General Hospital Department of Medicine, effective January 1, 2024.
Dr. Foulkes is a three-time graduate of the University of London, holding a BSc in Anatomy, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, and a PhD in Molecular Genetics.
Having been an integral member of the Division of Medical Genetics at the JGH since 1997, Dr. Foulkes is also a clinician-researcher with laboratories at both the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research and the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre.
In addition to his impressive academic background, Dr. Foulkes holds a Distinguished James McGill Professorship in the Departments of Medicine, Oncology, and Human Genetics. Recently appointed as the Chair of the Department of Human Genetics, he also holds the Alva Chair in that Department.
Dr. Foulkes is renowned for his extensive collaboration with colleagues worldwide to advance the understanding of the inherited basis of various cancers. Over the past 12 years, he has notably published over 90 papers on DICER1 and its associated syndrome. In 2014, he co-discovered SMARCA4 as the causative factor in Small Cell Carcinoma of the Ovary, Hypercalcemic Type, leading to novel treatment opportunities.
His contributions extend to the clinico-pathological characteristics of hereditary breast cancer, as well as the discovery and characterization of cancer predisposing founding mutations in Montreal populations.
Dr. Foulkes has supervised numerous students and fellows, boasting a publication record of over 700 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He is recognized as a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, the Royal College of Physicians, London, and the Royal Society of Canada.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, the Government of Quebec awarded Dr. Foulkes the Prix Wilder-Penfield in 2020 as part of its Prix du Quebec competition. In 2022, he received the Dr. Chew Wei Memorial Prize in Cancer Research from the University of British Columbia. We are confident that Dr. Foulkes will continue to make significant strides in the field of medical genetics and contribute to the advancement of healthcare at the Jewish General Hospital.
We take this opportunity to thank Dr. David Rosenblatt for his stellar leadership as Chief of Medical Genetics at the JGH since 1999. During his tenure, the Division has achieved tremendous growth and excellence in patient care, teaching and research in Hereditary Cancer as well as Prenatal Diagnosis.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. William Foulkes as Chief of the Division of Medical Genetics within the Department of Medicine at the Jewish General Hospital, effective January 1, 2024.
Le Dr Foulkes est diplômé à trois reprises de l'Université de Londres, détenant un BSc en anatomie, un baccalauréat en médecine et en chirurgie, ainsi qu'un doctorat en génétique moléculaire.
Membre essentiel de la Division de génétique médicale à l’Hôpital général juif (JGH) depuis 1997, le Dr Foulkes est également clinicien-chercheur avec des laboratoires à l'Institut Lady Davis de recherche médicale et à l'Institut de recherche du Centre universitaire de santé McGill.
En plus de son impressionnant parcours académique, le Dr Foulkes occupe une chaire distinguée James McGill dans les départements de médecine, d'oncologie et de génétique humaine. Récemment nommé président du Département de génétique humaine, il détient également la chaire Alva dans ce département.
Le Dr Foulkes est renommé pour sa collaboration étendue avec des collègues du monde entier afin d'avancer dans la compréhension des bases héréditaires de divers cancers. Au cours des 12 dernières années, il a notamment publié plus de 90 articles sur le DICER1 et son syndrome associé. En 2014, il a co-découvert le SMARCA4 comme facteur causatif du carcinome à petites cellules de l'ovaire, de type hypercalcémique, ouvrant la voie à de nouvelles opportunités de traitement.
Ses contributions s'étendent aux caractéristiques clinico-pathologiques du cancer du sein héréditaire, ainsi qu'à la découverte et à la caractérisation de mutations fondatrices prédisposant au cancer dans les populations de Montréal.
Le Dr Foulkes a encadré de nombreux étudiants et fellows, publiant plus de 700 manuscrits évalués par des pairs. Il est reconnu en tant que membre de l'Académie canadienne des sciences de la santé, du Collège royal des médecins de Londres et de la Société royale du Canada.
En reconnaissance de ses contributions exceptionnelles, le gouvernement du Québec a décerné au Dr Foulkes le Prix Wilder-Penfield en 2020 dans le cadre de son concours des Prix du Québec. En 2022, il a reçu le Prix commémoratif Dr Chew Wei en recherche sur le cancer de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique.
Nous sommes convaincus que le Dr Foulkes continuera à faire des progrès significatifs dans le domaine de la génétique médicale et contribuera à l'avancement des soins de santé à l'Hôpital général juif.
Nous tenons à exprimer notre profonde gratitude envers le Dr David Rosenblatt pour son leadership exceptionnel en tant que chef du Service de la génétique médicale au JGH depuis 1999.
