Statement on the passing of Gapliel "Gap" Paul

It is with heavy hearts, the Indigenous Health Professions Program mourns the death of a member of our circle, Gapliel “Gap” Paul.

Gapliel, 17, of Elsipogtog passed away suddenly in Fort McMurray, AB on Wednesday, June 28, 2023. Born in Kamloops, BC, he was the son of Trenton Paul and Lisa Levi.

We first met Gapliel when he attended our Eagle Spirit Science Futures Camp in the summer of 2018. Through his camp application, we learned of Gap’s passion in advocating for Indigenous social justice alongside the likes of Dr. Cindy Blackstock. Gap was twelve years old at the time.

Even though he was a grade level younger than the rest of his cohort at the Eagle Spirit Science Futures Camp, Gap thrived amongst his peers. Going beyond engaging with the content, Gap made a point to assist in the learning and participation of his fellow campers. This cultivated in him receiving our Eagle Spirit Science Futures Award, given to campers who act as role models to their camper cohort.

Gap would again attend the Eagle Spirit Science Futures Camp in 2019, where he took on the role of mentor for campers.

As one small part of Gapliel's life, we are grateful to have shared in their growth and education. We take this moment to recognize and uphold our inherent responsibility for the children of our nations. We, at IHPP, feel it is our duty to create awareness on Indigenous mental health support and suicide prevention. To create safe spaces for Indigenous LGBQTA2S+, continuing dialogue dispels stigma and promotes healing of our children as they grow and prosper.

Today, we grieve together. In their honor and spirit, we pledge to do better. We send our love and prayers for Gapliel's journey to their family and loved ones.

Skennen (In Peace),
