Indigenous Knowledge Holder Series 2019
We are honoured to announce that Skawennati will serve as our Indigenous Knowledge Holder for 2019. Kahnawake-born artist Skawennati makes work that addresses history, the future, and change from her perspective both as an urban Mohawk and a cyber punk avatar. She is co-director of Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace at Concordia University. Skawennati's work imagining Indigenous futures and ensuring the existence of Indigenous people in cyberspace. Each for our Indigenous Knowledge Holder Series, we seeks to enrich the McGill Community by inviting an Indigenous Knowledge Holder to spend a week at the university to share their scholarship, work, and advocacy. Indigenous Knowledge Holders encompass generations of knowledge embedded within the cultural and epistemological worldview of Indigenous communities that span generations. This Series seeks to act as a bridge between that knowledge and the institution while placing an emphasis on Indigenous community collaborations and partnerships through academic events, workshops, and community presentations.
- Skawennati has a busy week! She will be doing a work shop titled Seven Generations Character Design for Indigenous students at the First People's House on March 26th.
- March 27 at 5:30pm in Arts-W 215, she will present her keynote address, My Life as an Avatar.
- On the 28th, she will present a film screening at 5pm in Leacock 232, Indigenous Machinima.
- Skawennati will be hosting a beading circle from noon until 3pm at 3463 Peel St. A Beading Circle is a Thing.
