Indigenous Tuition Initiative

Implemented for Fall 2024, McGill University is moving forward with one of its key reconciliation commitments outlined in the institution’s 52 Calls to Action, calling on the university to:  

“Implement a student funding model similar to the Haudenosaunee Promise at Syracuse University, which provides tuition and mandatory fee coverage for Indigenous learners from proximate territories.”  

Indigenous News Outlets

  • Eastern Door - A community-based newspaper serving the community of Kahnawake since 1992

  • Nunatsiaq News - The newspaper of record for Nunavut and the Nunavik territory of Quebec. It has been published since 1973.

  • Aboriginal Peoples' Television Network (APTN) - Award-winning television programming by, for and about Indigenous Peoples to share with all Canadians.

  • Nation Talk News - Indigenous-run media outlet (daily email sign-up is available on the website) 

  • Academica Indigenous Top Ten - Academica's Indigenous Top Ten (ITT) is a free biweekly publication designed to share news, interesting research, best practices, and policy developments regarding First Nations, Métis, and Inuit education in Canada.

  • First Peoples Law Blog - First Peoples Law is a law firm dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. They work closely with First Nations to defend their Aboriginal title, rights and Treaty rights, uphold their Indigenous laws and governance and ensure economic prosperity for their members. The First Peoples Law website has a public education section, including a blog, reading lists, and a podcast.

Office of Indigenous Initiatives Newsletter

In December 2022, the OII launched its first quarterly newsletter, highlighting and sharing Indigenous initiatives and news across McGill University. The newsletter is now distributed on a bi-weekly (September- April) and monthly (May-August) basis.
