The Buddy Program

Now in its 35th year, the Buddy Program has helped thousands of international students settle into McGill and Montreal.

To help you transition to life in Montreal and at McGill, the Buddy Program connects new international students with returning students. Returning McGill students provide the friendly face, the helping hand, and the first Montreal friendship that can make a world of difference for newly arriving international students like yourself. 

Fall 2024 matching will begin in May 2024.

Note to new international students: Kindly check your McGill email regularly to receive notifications about your match. 

Volunteers and new students are paired on a rolling basis during the year, allowing new Fall students to be in touch with their buddies over the summer. There is no hard deadline for signing up, although it's important for both volunteers and new students to sign up before the term begins in order to ensure a smooth pairing.

Our buddy volunteers are eager to help you and make your transition to life at McGill easier and smoother. We request you to recognize and appreciate the time and effort your buddies put in to help you. You can do so by-

• Being enthusiastic and curious
• Being responsive when your buddy reaches out to you
• Respecting your buddy's privacy
• Understanding what your buddy can help you with and what is beyond their abilities (see 2. of New Student FAQ)
• Being clear about your needs from the buddy relationship
