Thank you for the McGill Undergraduate Internship Fund during my internship with CIBC in Hong Kong this summer. As price level is high in Hong Kong, this award really helps alleviate some financial pressure during my stay there.

Securing this summer internship with CIBC World markets in Hong Kong means a lot to me. It offers me more exposure to the real-world banking industry, across different lines of business within CIBC including Corporate Banking, Investment Banking and Global Markets. More importantly, I have established very meaningful network through this internship. The CIBC colleagues in Hong Kong kindly connect me to people in Toronto office. It gives me more opportunities to explore a career with CIBC next year after graduation.

CIBC Capital Markets aims at helping clients raise capital, grow and invest to drive their business strategies. CIBC is a strong North American client-focused organization providing global perspective, striving to forge deep relationships with each client to understand and address their unique challenges and needs. In terms of lines of business, CIBC Capital Markets is divided into 3 main parts: Global Markets, Global Investment Banking and Corporate Banking. CIBC’s industry expertise spreads across a wide range of sectors including Energy, mining, Financial Institutions and so on.

I was hired as an intern in Global Trade & Banking, a sub-division of Corporate Banking at CIBC Capital Markets. My job responsibilities include preparing Briefing Memos for CIBC senior management’s reference at the upcoming SIBOS & IMF conference. In addition, I also helped Sanjay, a colleague in Toronto office, to figure out which RMA relationships between CIBC and some Asian banks need to be managed locally in Hong Kong office. I also helped conduct an enhanced due diligence on a previous Philippines client before onboarding them again.

The highlights of this internship are definitely the network established. I basically talked to every colleague in the Hong Kong office, got to know them better and learned more about what they do on a day-to day basis. Also, I feel very lucky to meet Harry and Roman during their visit to Hong Kong office at the end of July. They’re really senior people at CIBC, and it’s good to talk to them. Besides, I study Finance and Accounting at McGill. So this internship resonates a lot about what I’ve learned at school, and bridges the gap between theories in Finance and the banking industry in real life.

This internship certainly helps me establish meaningful network with people working at CIBC and is very beneficial for my future career. Now, I get a better sense of different lines of business at CIBC, or banking industry in general. I gradually find my true interests in the financial services industry. More importantly, the connection made at CIBC Hong Kong can also help me explore a potential career with CIBC back in Toronto headquarter. I look forward to pursuing a full-time position with CIBC in Toronto next year after graduation.

Overall, it’s a great experience spending this summer with CIBC in Hong Kong. Thanks again for making the internship experience available for McGill students. I look forward to the new opportunities brought by this CIBC summer internship in the future!
