Map of Human-Environment events for Madagascar during the 18th century based on the IOW Database

The IOW Project database is a unique collection of historical data in the Indian Ocean World. The IOW is defined here as a geographic area that includes eastern Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the emerging superpowers China and India.

This online resource encompasses geographically explicit data sets that provide a framework for data collection, organization, retrieval, visualization and analysis for thousands of records of historical events in this vast region.  Currently, this web-based database includes historical data related to five core topics aiming to understand human-environment relationships:

  • Conflict
  • Environmental events
  • Human migrations
  • Exchange
  • Disease

Access to the database is by request only, but some aspects of the database are available publically through Story Maps, such as our Story Map on Typhoons
