Language Courses in the German Program 2017-2018
German 202: Beginning German (full-year 6 cr. course):
German 202 is designed for students with no or little prior German or high-school study of the language. Emphasis lies on developing speaking and reading skills and therefore practicing grammatical structures in a communicative context. The course also provides an introduction to a variety of cultural aspects of the German speaking countries.
German 200: Intensive Beginning German (6 cr. course – Winter only):
German 200 is a 6-credit that is offered in the Winter semester. The course meets four times a week for 80 minutes per class. It covers the materials for first-year German in one term and therefore comes with a demanding workload. Emphasis lies on practicing grammatical structures in a communicative context and developing reading skills. The course also provides an introduction to a variety of cultural aspects of the German speaking countries.
German 307: Intermediate German (full-year 6 cr. course)
Germ 307 focuses on four skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing. German 307 exposes students to a variety of literary, non-literary texts and film and focuses on current issues in the German-speaking countries. The second term introduces students to more sophisticated literary texts and film. The course includes a thorough grammar review.
German 300: Intensive Intermediate German (6 cr. course – Fall only)
German 300 is a 6 cr. course that is offered in the Fall semester. The course meets four times a week for 80 minutes per class. It covers the materials for second-year German in one semester and therefore comes with a demanding workload. The course practices all four skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) and includes a broad variety of sophisticated literary and non-literary texts as well as films. It also provides a thorough grammar review.
German 325: Intensive Advanced Conversation, Composition and Reading (6 cr. course - Fall and Winter)
This intensive advanced German course focuses on improving skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. At this level, students will increase their reading speed, develop the ability to discuss and interpret literary and non-literary texts and to interact with others on a variety of social, historical and political topics. Further emphasis is placed on vocabulary and expression oneself in concise written form. Students will practice aural comprehension and strengthen their oral communicative competence in various modes of discussion, presentation, and everyday conversation. German 325 meets four times a week for 80 minutes per class.
