Confronting Islamophobia: Envisioning Ways to Combat Anti-Muslim Racism

On January 29, 2017, the massacre at the Grande mosquée de Québec that killed 6 men -- Azzeddine Soufiane, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Aboubaker Thabti, Ibrahima Barry and Abdelkrim Hassane -- and wounded 19 others put a spotlight on the pervasiveness of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism in Québec and Canada. It was the largest political mass shooting in Canada in 25 years, and the first time Muslims were killed inside a mosque in North America. Since then, however, the public discourse and media coverage on the topic has veered from empty platitudes to an outright denial of the severity of the issue.

How can we come together and confront the reality of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism? Are there ways to combat this together as we move forward? How might we collectively remember and honour the lives of those killed at the Grande mosquée de Québec? Join us for a panel with Dolores Chew (South Asian Women's Community Centre), Safa Chebbi (Table de concertation contre le racisme systémique), and Syed Hussan (#RememberJan29 campaign), and moderated by Michelle Hartman (Institute of Islamic Studies).
