Winners of the Baxter Family Competition on Federalism 2021
The Faculty of Law of McGill University and the Peter MacKell Chair in Federalism are delighted to announce the winners of the 2020-2021 Baxter Family Competition on Federalism, organized by Professor Johanne Poirier.
For the first time, the Competition was open to authors from the disciplines of law or political science. This edition’s overall theme was Federalism, Identity and Public Policy in Challenging Times.

Professor Lionel Smith reappointed as Sir William C. Macdonald Chair
The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Professor Lionel Smith has been reappointed as Sir William C. Macdonald Chair, effective 1 May 2021 to 30 April 2028.
Established in 1895, the Macdonald Chairs are some of the oldest endowed positions at McGill.

Professor Adelle Blackett receives 2020 CCIL Scholarly Book Award
The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Everyday Transgressions: Domestic Workers’ Transnational Challenge to International Labor Law, by Professor Adelle Blackett, F.R.S.C., Ad. E., has received the Canadian Council on International Law’s (CCIL) Scholarly Book Award for 2020.

McGill Law places 25th worldwide in 2021 QS World University Rankings
McGill University’s Faculty of Law ranked as the 25th best law school worldwide in the 2021 World University Rankings by Subject, published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
McGill Law has featured in the top 30 institutions of the QS rankings each year since 2015. The ranking is based on an institution’s academic reputation, employer reputation, H-index citations, and citations per paper.

Professors Ramanujam and Mégret named co-directors of the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism
The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Professor Frédéric Mégret and Professor Nandini Ramanujam will begin a term as co-directors of the Faculty’s Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism (CHRLP) on 1 February 2021. Their term will last until 30 June 2024.

Robert Leckey Reappointed as Dean of the Faculty of Law
The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Samuel Gale Professor Robert Leckey, BCL/LLB’02, has been reappointed as dean. Dean Leckey’s reappointment, approved by the Board of Governors at its meeting on 10 December 2020, is effective 1 July 2021 for a term of five years.

Irwin Cotler named Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism
We are pleased to share that Professor Emeritus the Hon. Irwin Cotler, OC, OQ, PC, BA’61, BCL’64, LLD’19, has been named Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism by the Prime Minister of Canada. Professor Cotler is the first incumbent of this role aimed at preserving the stories of Holocaust survivors through younger generations, and working to promote and defend pluralism, inclusion, and human rights.

The 2021 ranking by subject rated McGill the 16th-best school worldwide for studying law, up from 20th place last year.
