Student Andrea Buitrago Carranza to participate at next U21 Undergrad conference

Second-year law student Andrea Buitrago Carranza has been selected to participate in the 2014 Universitas 21 Undergraduate Research Conference (URC), which will be hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, July 7 to 11. This year, the conference theme is Food Safety: From Farm to Table.

Emilie Conway to clerk at the International Court of Justice

We are happy to announce that Emilie Conway, BCL/LLB’13, has been selected by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to participate in the Court’s 2014-2015 Judicial Assistants Programme.

Judicial Assistants are chosen to work directly with one judge, helping him or her in the preparation for hearings and the drafting of judgments.

Ms Conway was selected to work directly with the President of the Court, Judge Peter Tomka. She will begin work in September 2014.

Law Student Éloïse Gagné receives Scarlet Key Award

The Faculty of Law was delighted to learn that one of its students received a Scarlet Key Award during a pining ceremony held at McGill’s Faculty Club on March 26, 2014.

Éloïse Gagné, who served as the LSA’s president in 2013-2014 and was a member of the 2013 editorial board of the McGill Law Journal, received her Scarlet Key pin from Principal Suzanne Fortier, in recognition of her efforts to help support McGill and the broader community.

On April 8, the Barreau du Québec announced that it would award the 2014 Christine Tourigny Award of Merit to Adelle Blackett, a labour law professor at the Faculty of Law of McGill University.

Michelle Lahey will head to Ottawa as a Jaimie Anderson intern this summer

Michelle Lahey (1L) is one of three Canadian students selected for a Jaimie Anderson internship in Ottawa this summer. Starting in May, Michelle will be working in the office of MP John Williamson (New Brunswick Southwest).

As Michelle tells it, “My passion is the Canadian political process, and I hope to work on the Hill in some capacity later in my career – I am absolutely delighted to be given this once in a lifetime opportunity!”

New Appointments for Helena Lamed and Nandini Ramanujam

Robert Leckey joins Global Young Academy

The Faculty of Law is proud to announce that Professor Robert Leckey, a William Dawson Scholar in the Faculty of Law and a member of the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law, has been elected to the Global Young Academy.

Based in Berlin, the prestigious Academy consists of more than 155 young, independent researchers from around the world, who come together to address topics of global importance during a four-year term.

Jeffrey Edwards appointed to the Civil Division of the Court of Quebec

The Faculty of Law was delighted to learn that on January 29, 2014, adjunct professor Jeffrey Edwards (BCL’86, LLB’86) was appointed to the Civil Division of the Court of Quebec in Montreal.

Justice Edwards, who was admitted to the Bar in 1987, has mostly practiced civil and commercial litigation. He is also an accredited arbitrator and mediator, and as such, he specializes in the resolution of construction and product quality claims.
