The McGill campus is located near Mount Royal, right in the heart of downtown Montreal.
A city that has been called “half-Brooklyn, half-Paris,” Montreal has a unique European character coupled with a distinctly vibrant cultural life, making it a place like no other in North America.
QS has ranked Montreal one of the top 15 world’s best student cities since 2017. It is a safe, clean, and diverse city with rich art and music scenes, world-renowned architecture, and an un-paralleled openness and “joie de vivre”. It is also an affordable city, compared with other major cities. Montreal is home to several major universities and smaller colleges, making it an exciting and youthful city with lots to offer.
Language
French is the official language of the province of Quebec, and Montreal is the second-largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris. It is the primary language used on signs, in public service establishments, and in businesses. In most regions of Montreal, however, English is widely spoken, and most information is available bilingually.
McGill has various French-language instruction options available, whether you want to start from scratch with your verb conjugaisons, brush up on your conversation skills or immerse yourself in an intensive five-level program.
Arts et culture

Transport
Le système de transport collectif de Montréal est sans aucun doute l’un des plus efficaces en Amérique du Nord. La Société de transport de Montréal (STM) et EXO desservent l’île en entier grâce à un réseau d’autobus, de métro (le plus long du Canada) et de trains. Les étudiants à temps plein de tous les âges ont droit à un tarif réduit. De l’information sur le transport adapté est aussi disponible à McGill Transport.
La ville possède également un vaste réseau de pistes cyclables, grâce auquel les déplacements à vélo sont rapides et sécuritaires. Bixi est le système de vélos en partage de Montréal. Les stations Bixi sont en service d’avril à la mi-novembre, et plusieurs d’entre elles sont situées aux abords de l’Université McGill.
On peut également attraper un taxi assez facilement dans la plupart des rues principales. Vous pouvez aussi commander un taxi par téléphone. Uber est également présent dans la ville, ainsi que Communauto .
Le principal aéroport de Montréal est l’aéroport Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau International. Les taxis sont tenus en vertu de la loi de facturer un tarif fixe raisonnable pour les trajets à destination ou en provenance de l’aéroport, plus les frais de gestion des bagages. La navette 747 de la STM relie le terminus d’autobus du centre-ville à l’aéroport Trudeau International et fait plusieurs arrêts en chemin. Le titre de transport de la navette 747 est assorti d’un laissez-passer valide 24 heures sur tout le réseau bus et métro de la ville. Si vous êtes titulaire d’un titre de transport mensuel, le trajet est gratuit.
Il est également possible de se rendre dans une multitude de villes en Amérique du Nord en autobus à partir de Montréal. Le principal terminus d’autobus est la Gare d’autocars de Montréal. Les principales compagnies d’autobus y sont présentes, notamment Greyhound, Orléans Express, Coach Canada.
Montréal se situe dans le corridor Windsor-Québec de Via Rail, et il est possible de voyager en train partout en Amérique du Nord. Le train Adirondack d’Amtrak propose un service quotidien vers et en provenance de New York. La Gare Centrale de Montréal se trouve à 15 minutes à pied du campus.
Weather
Montreal has four beautiful and distinct seasons. In the spring, outdoor patios open and parks fill with people relaxing, playing games, having picnics and enjoying the sun. The winter months are a wonderland with Montrealers truly embracing winter activities and celebrations. Cross-country skiing and tobogganing in Mont-Royal Park, and ice skating in one of the many free outdoor rinks around the city are popular pastimes.
Housing
If you are coming into the program directly from CEGEP and you indicated in your application that you would like to live in on-campus housing, you should log in to Minerva to complete a questionnaire, and indicate your residence preference. If you have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree before beginning the program, and you indicated in your application that you would like to live in on-campus housing, please email housing.residences [at] mcgill.ca and include your name and student ID when you make your inquiry. Most students at the Faculty of Law live in off-campus housing and McGill provides excellent resources for finding housing in Montreal on the Off-Campus Housing webpage, including listings, Montreal-specific apartment terminology, neighborhoods that are easily accessible, and the best time to start looking for an apartment in Montreal.
Students with Dependents

Most Quebec daycares are subsidized by the government and are relatively low cost. Space is limited however, and applicants for subsidized childcare are often placed on waiting lists, so be sure to make daycare inquiries as soon as possible. If you are not eligible for subsidized daycare or are having difficulty securing a place for your child, there are many private daycares in Montreal.
