On October 28th, McGill’s Rare and Special collections was out in the community for a special event on Jewish Foodways held at the Westmount Library. Prize-winning author Joan Nathan, food historian Lara Rabinovitch, as well as author and television personality Daphna Rabinovitch provided tasting notes on how Jewish foodways have evolved from generation to generation. Journalist Susan Schwartz moderated the discussion. Attendees had the chance to engage with the panelists through a question and answer period and a book sale and signing.

This panel brought together some of the biggest names writing about Jewish cooking today. Joan Nathan’s most recent book King Solomon’s Table, is a contemporary exploration of Jewish cooking around the world. Her award-winning cookbook author, food writer, and journalist. Her best-selling books include Jewish Cooking in America and Quiches, Kugels, and Couscous; My Search for Jewish Cooking in France.

Daphna Rabinovitch is familiar to fans of Canadian Living Television, where she inspires viewers with her "you-can-do-it" approach to cooking. She shares her international experience and her passion as co-host of Canadian Living Cooks.

Lara Rabinovitch brought a food historian’s perspective to the panel. As a specialist in food culture and immigrant history, she consults for Google, writing about new restaurants in Los Angeles for Zagat and Google Maps. She freelances for other media outlets like California Sunday, the Los Angeles TimesLucky Peach, and Saveur.

This event, in partnership with Library and Community Events, City of Westmount, celebrated the rich traditions and heritage of Jewish foodways in Montreal. The rare collections at McGill are open to all, and this event showcases McGill’s collections for what they are: a shared cultural heritage belonging to all Montrealers.

The rare cookbook collection can be consulted in the Rare Books Reading room Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM.
