About McGill University

McGill University is one of Canada’s most renowned institutions of higher learning and of the leading university in the world. It was established in 1821 by a montreal merchant named James McGill who formed the university’s precursor, McGill College. Mcgill is located in the heart of downtown Montreal with a second campus situated in the west of the island for agricultural and environmental studies. McGill is recognized around the world for its excellent in teaching and research programs and offers over 300 programs of study in the field of Arts, Education, Music, Science, Medicine, Engineering, Management, and Agricultural and environmental sciences.

All MACAS events will be held in the Education Building at McGill university, which is located at 3700 McTavish Street.

 

Information about Montreal

Montreal is the largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec. It is the second largest city in Canada, 18th largest in North America. Originally named “Ville-Marie” or “City of Mary”, it is named now after Mount Royal, the mountain which is located in the heart of the city, behind McGill university. The city is located on on an island set on the Saint Lawrence River called, the Island of Montreal. Montreal was founded in 1642 and is predominantly French-speaking like most of the province of Québec that it is located within . It is home to beautiful churches, historical sites, cobblestoned French Colonial architecture, sea ports, and many cultural communities. Montreal is known for its food and arts culture offering some of Canada’s most famous entertainment like Cirque du Soleil and being home to some of the top restaurants in the country.

 

How to get here

Montreal is home to Pierre-Elliott Trudeau International Airport, one of the busiest airports in Canada.

From the Airport

By taxi: Rates to downtown are fixed at $41.

By bus: The 747 Express Bus costs $10 to the Lionel-Groulx and Berri-UQAM Métro Station downtown with several stops in between. Tickets can be bought from vending machines inside the airport or on the bus (exact change only, no bills). The ride takes approximately 45 minutes and busses operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Note: This $10 ticket is also a one day bus pass. Therefore you might want to keep your ticket if you plan on taking a city bus or Metro anytime during the following 24 hours.

By Uber: Uber operates at the YUL(Pierre-Elliott Trudeau International Airport) at door 6 located at the departure levels. Choose a ride option that suits your group size and luggage needs. The price of an Uber to downtown is approximately 35$ which is paid through the app.

By car

Here are the different routes from major cities near Montreal. If you are driving, NOTE: no right turn on a red light on the island of Montreal!

From Sherbrooke: West on Autoroute 10. About 150km, or 1 hour 40 minutes.

From Ottawa: East on Highway 417, then east on autoroute 40, then south on autoroute 15 (decarie) until autoroute 720 east to bring you downtown. About 200km, or 2 hours.

From Toronto: East on Highway 401. About 540km, or 5.5 hours.

From Québec City: West on autoroute Transcanadienne 40. About 250km, or 2.75 hours.
