The Department of Bioresource Engineering invites you to a special seminar by Md Shamim Ahamed, Ph.D., EIT, Nortek Air Solutions, Saskatoon, SK

Farmers need to produce about 70% more food for an additional 1.7 billion people by 2050 while already using 80% of arable land. Currently, we are facing a trilemma for agricultural production systems in which there are three almost equally undesirable alternatives: (1) shortage of food, (2) shortage of resources, and (3) degradation of the environment. The controlled environment engineering principles in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team have emerging opportunities for improvement of yield and quality of food with less resource consumption and environmental degradation. This seminar will address the prospects of urban agriculture for future food demand and the future research needs to address the challenges in urban agriculture and plant production systems. The presentation will be concluded by highlighting the research plans for sustainable/regenerative urban agricultural systems.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Md Shamim Ahamed is currently working as a Research Engineer at Nortek Air Solutions, Saskatoon; he is also affiliated as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Farm Power and Machinery at Bangladesh Agricultural University. He also worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Concordia University and the City University of Hong Kong. Dr. Ahamed received his Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in Environmental Engineering, Master of Science in Farm Power and Machinery, and Bachelor of Agricultural Engineering from Bangladesh Agricultural University. Dr. Ahamed’s research mainly focuses on energy modeling and energy-efficient design for the next-generation agricultural built-environments. His research area also spans on automated fault-detection and diagnosis of buildings HVAC systems using machine learning-based algorithms.

Md Shamim Ahamed is a candidate for the faculty position in Urban Agriculture & Plant Production Engineering.
