Excavation work around Redpath Hall & McTavish wing of Redpath Library Building begins June 3

During the week of June 3, 2024, standard archeological and soil investigations will be conducted along McTavish Street around Redpath Hall and the McTavish Wing of the Redpath Library Building to assess the building envelope. Redpath Hall and the Redpath Library Building are part of a designated heritage site. Standard protocol requires that McGill conduct excavation work before starting any construction projects.

The exploratory investigations will be done in two phases:

1. Archeological work from June 3-6: The investigations consist of excavating seven (7) holes 1m x 1m x 0,8m deep. A team of archeologists will be on site to assess the presence, if any, of artefacts.
2. Soil characterization work on June 7 starting at 7:00 a.m.: The investigations consist of excavating three (3) holes 1m x 1m x 1,4m deep to analyze and determine, if any, the presence of contaminants.

This work will be conducted using small equipment producing a minimal noise. Portable construction fences will limit access to the area to authorized personnel only.

Objet : Travaux d’excavation autour de l’édifice de la Salle Redpath et du pavillon de la Bibliothèque Redpath, aile McTavish, dès le 3 juin

Pendant la semaine du 3 juin 2024, des travaux standard de fouille archéologique et d’investigation du sol seront effectués le long de la rue McTavish près de la Salle Redpath et de l’aile McTavish de la Bibliothèque Redpath dans le but d’évaluer l’enveloppe du bâtiment. L’édifice de la Salle Redpath et le pavillon de la Bibliothèque Redpath font partie d’un site patrimonial désigné. Le protocole standard exige que McGill mène des travaux d’excavation avant d’entamer tout projet de construction.

L’investigation du sol se fera en deux parties :

1. Des travaux archéologiques seront menés du 3 au 6 juin : ces fouilles impliquent l’excavation de sept (7) puits d’environ 1 m x 1 m et 0,8 m de profondeur. Une équipe d’archéologues sera sur place pour chercher et examiner la présence d’artéfacts, s’il y a lieu.
2. Les travaux de caractérisation du sol commenceront le 7 juin à 7 h : ces investigations impliquent l’excavation de trois (3) puits d’environ 1 m x 1 m et 1,4 m de profondeur dans le but d’analyser la présence de contaminants et d’en déterminer la nature le cas échéant.

Tous ces travaux seront faits avec de la petite machinerie afin de minimiser les nuisances sonores. Des clôtures limiteront l’accès à la zone désignée au personnel autorisé seulement.
