Less body fat for toddlers taking vitamin D

 

Supplement given during first year of life critical for muscle-mass development

A healthy intake of vitamin D in the first year of life appears to set children up to have more muscle mass and less body fat as toddlers, according to a new study published in the journal Pediatric Obesity.

Excitement was in the air last May at a glitzy Toronto reception for “rockstar” professionals not accustomed to glitz: research scientists from six Canadian universities... At McGill University, insect scientist Chris Buddle submitted one study to a journal in “more of a casual, non-jargony language, (trying) to write it in a way that’s a bit more engaging, and not the typical dry scientific writing.”

Government of Canada invests $27 million to extend the Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Program for another five years

 

Minister Lawrence MacAulay was on campus to participate in the Symposium and Wrap-Up meeting for the “Effects of Agricultural Water Management Systems on Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Eastern Canada” project led by Chandra Madramootoo (Bioresource Engineering).  The project was funded by the Agricultural Greenhouse Gases program.

Two New Food Security Projects Announced

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Global Affairs Canada have announced six new projects to be supported under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF). The projects will develop, test and apply ways to scale up innovations in food security and nutrition. These projects will scale up effective, pilot-tested innovations so that they reach poor rural populations, particularly women and small-holder farmers.

On estime que la moitié de ce que l'on produit comme aliments dans les pays industrialisés serait gaspillée. Au Canada, on jetterait, selon Statistique Canada, 183 kilogrammes de nourriture par an, par personne. À qui la faute? À l'industrie alimentaire, ou au consommateur? Pour en discuter, nous recevons Pascal Thériault, agroéconomiste et professeur à l'Université McGill. Il enseigne aussi le marketing alimentaire.
