Burnside Hall Room 1025 (Grad Lounge), 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal, QC, H3A 0B9, CA

Hi, everyone,

TheMathematics & Statistics Graduate Student Seminar will convene at 1:00pm this Friday, November 16, in the Main Lounge (Burnside 1025). As usual, there will be pizza.

This week, Wissam Ghantous will talk to us about cryptography:

Have you ever wondered what all the hype was about quantum computers? How do they "break cryptography"? Or what even is cryptography?

I will start with the beginnings of cryptography, and we will end up talking about modern aspects of it. Some included topics are: basic codes, elliptic curves, and Shor's algorithm (i.e., the end of RSA).

Warning: This talk may contain number theory, so be ready to hear words like "group", "modulo", and "gcd".

See you all there!

Allgraduate students are invited. As with all talks in thegraduate student seminar, this talk will be accessible to allgraduate students in math and stats. This seminar was made possible by funding from the McGill Mathematics and Statistics Department and PGSS.
