Historical Information from 2012-2014

From a February 26, 2013 email communication to all librarians from the Daniel Boyer, Chair of the Library Governance Committee: Subject - Appointments to the Library Reappointment & Tenure Committee and the University Tenure Committee for Libraries for 2013-2014.

This procedure is being introduced by the Governance Committee as a transitional measure. An explanation of the envisioned future processes and the transition period will be presented at the February 6th meeting of Library Council.

Library Reappointment & Tenure Committee:
Six members and two alternates
Three-year terms
Terms follow the fiscal year (June 1st–May 31st).
University Tenure Committee:
The Dean of Libraries, two Library members, and one alternate [1]
Two-year terms
Terms follow the fiscal year (June 1st–May 31st).

Process:

We are moving to a process whereby each year two returning members step down and two new members are added. The goal is to ensure there will always be four experienced colleagues on the Committee. Currently there are four returning members on the committee.[2] For 2013-2014, a slate of two candidates will be proposed by the Governance Committee to ensure representativeness of the McGill Librarian cohort. Additionally there will be a call for the nomination of other candidates at the February 6th meeting of Library Council.

2012-2013

From a March 7, 2012 email communication to all librarians from the Dean, subject line: Membership of Reappointment and Tenure Committees

We have a sizable cohort of individuals who will be reviewed this year for reappointment and tenure. It is a common practice in the faculties to have both reappointment and tenure reviews performed by the same group of people. For continuity's sake this is a very good practice. Individuals are then viewed consistently by the same individuals and on the same terms throughout the tenure probationary period. For this reason, to expedite the process for review and to have individuals serve in reappointment and tenure reviews who have the most immediate experience, for this year only, the Reappointment and Tenure Committee will consist of those members from the previous standing Reappointment and Library Tenure Committees combined (who are still on staff). (...)

(...) Therefore the Committee above is constituted for this year only, and a new committee will be formed in time for next year’s reappointment and tenure reviews after we have discussed, documented and implemented our collegial process in Library Council. (Colleen Cook)
