2025 Admissions

Special Pathways - Underrepresented Groups

The MDCM Admissions Committee looks forward to welcoming excellent candidates from diverse backgrounds to the McGill community and to increasing the number of professionals from underrepresented populations in medicine including members of the Indigenous, Black, Rural and Small Population pathways and from low socio-economic backgrounds.

The Undergraduate Medical Admissions Office has created the following pathways for underrepresented groups:

Indigenous Candidates

For members of the Indigenous community, we encourage you to self-identify on your online application and to contact our office should you have any questions about the application process, or the requirements to apply. Indigenous-specific bursaries and financial aid are available in addition to regular financial aid to all students.

We also take this opportunity to inform you of the services and events that are available to you, and we look forward to your application!

Black Candidates

Candidates who self-identify as Black and are residents of Quebec are encouraged to apply through the Black candidate pathway, for candidates who choose to self-identify, there is support available from the Social Accountability and Community Engagement (SACE) Office during the application process, in addition there is the Community of Support program and current and future applicants are welcome to join now! In addition, there are a number of financial awards specific to applicants who self-identify as Black administered by the Scholarships and Student Aid office that admitted students can apply for.

Rural and Small Population Centre Candidates

For residents of Quebec who come from Rural and Small Populations and attended public secondary school in rural or small-town areas of Quebec, there are between 2 to 7 seats for eligible University level candidates applying to the 4-year MDCM program. The medical network of McGill University (RUISSS) covers a large territory of the province of Quebec that serves over 1.9 million people from different communities and walks of life spanning from the Montérégie Ouest to Nunavik. We welcome you to be active learners within our network to participate in the care and services we provide to the communities we serve.

Low Socioeconomic Background Candidates

The general admissions process for our programs has been designed to be inclusive of candidates from low socio-economic status backgrounds without a specific application pathway to achieve this goal. The faculty’s definition of low socio-economic status (low SES) can be found here (www.mcgill.ca/medhealthsci-saceoffice/about/diversity-report).

We are proud to share that our admitted student body maintains a similar proportion of low-SES students as the overall Quebec population. Learn more about the admissions accessibility measures in place to support low-SES applicants: www.mcgill.ca/medadmissions/applying/categories/special-pathways/low-socio-economic-status-backgrounds-low-ses. The MDCM Admissions Committee strongly encourages candidates who meet the criteria to apply.

Financial assistance is available to you through the Scholarships and Student Aid Office.

French language proficiency

French language proficiency is required for all candidates applying to the medicine and Med-P Qualifying year. Candidates applying in the Rural and Small Populations, Indigenous or Black Student Application Pathways are invited to contact the Undergraduate Medical Admissions Office: admissions.med [at] mcgill.ca to learn about options for support or accommodations in meeting the language proficiency requirement.
