A Collaborative Award

Professor Mark Driscoll's project “The development of a novel surgical spine procedure into a physics based virtual reality FEM training platform” was awarded the prize for collaboration between industry partners and an academic institution with the MEDTEQ+ consortium from the Association for research, development and innovation in Québec (ADRIQ) at their 2021 Innovation Prize Gala event. The project was done through a partnership between McGill University, CAE Inc., and DePuy Synthes, of Johnson & Johnson Medical.

The project produced a new training simulator aimed at surgeons performing spinal cord surgeries using a new spinal cord surgical method known as oblique lateral lumber interbody fusion. This method reduces the length of time a patient would be hospitalized post-surgery and also reduces hospital costs as compared to the traditional surgical methods.

Many congratulations to all involved!
