Capstone Project Proposals

If you are interested in having a student team help you advance your interdisciplinary or medical device or technology project throughout this academic year, please fill out this form and we will get back to you soon.

What is involved?

Teams of 5 undergraduate students work on the project from September to April every year. The course concludes at the beginning of April with McGill Design Day, where students present the work on their project to judges from academia and industry alike. Teams can be from the departments of Bioengineering, Electrical, Computer and Software Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Mixed teams comprised of students from different departments are also welcome.

Students work on the design during the fall semester and create the prototype in the winter semester. They work under the supervision of the sponsoring client and an academic advisor.

Project selection process

At the beginning of the fall semester, students are provided with a list of potential projects from industry, professors, and student teams. Students are free to choose their own teammates and make a selection based on their top three project choices. Professors and TAs then assign students and projects together. At this point, both sponsoring clients and student teams must agree on their assigned pairings to finalize project assignments. As such, submitting a project proposal does not obligate you to work with any given team.

Information specific to companies

The overhead administrative fee for one selected capstone project is $4500 CAD. For two selected projects in one academic year, the total fee is $6720 and it is $8400 for three projects. Companies also cover the costs of all materials and supplies required for the prototype.

Throughout the course of the project, students are supervised by a professor and by at least one member of your team. Regular meetings are expected. As the client, you must approve all expenses prior to purchase.

Information specific to professors

All materials and supplies are covered by the client professor, who must approve all expenses prior to purchasing.

Some teams might be assigned an additional academic advisor.
