"Bomb cyclone rings in the New Year" - The McGill Tribune

Professor and Chair of our department, John Gyakum is featured in an article published in this week's issue of the The McGill Tribune. He is credited with coining the "bomb cyclone" term which has been trending in the national and international press, receiving huge amount of public attention before and in the aftermath of  great blizzard storm at the beginning of this year.

Award for our student Jade Sauvé

We are pleased to inform you that Jade Sauvé, one of our undergraduate students, supervised by her research advisor, Carolina Dufour, won the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society prize for the best student poster in physical oceanography or atmospheric sciences at the Québec Océan meeting two weeks ago.

The title of her poster is “"Antarctic sea ice trend: Insights from a suite of climate models.”

A study realized by scientists from McGill and Columbia Universities featured in Arctic Now journal

Results from recent Earth's Future article based on a study co-authored by Prof. Bruno Tremblay covered in Arctic Now.

Published in the weekly journal of science Nature

An international team of researchers, including Prof. Andreas Zuend managed to publish their work as a letter in Nature titled “Surface tension prevails over solute effect in organic-influenced cloud droplet activation”.

We are pleased to inform you that Cécile Defforge, an M. Sc. Student supervised by Professor Tim Merlis, has received the Poster Student Award at the 32nd AMS Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology, held during 17-22 April in San Juan, PR.

We are equally pleased to announce that that Kai Melamed-Turkish, has been awarded the CMOS Undergraduate Scholarship, at the recently held CMOS Congress, in Fredericton, NB, during 30 May - 2 June.

New featured article on Hg cycling in the American Chemical Society's Chemical & Engineering News

The Huffington Post interviews our very own Prof. Ariya about her, and her colleagues, research paper role of snow and cold environment in the fate and effects of nanoparticles and select organic pollutants from gasoline engine exhaust.

Major Discovery on the Role of Snow

Our very own Yevegen Nazerneko and Uday Kurien along with faculty member Parisa Ariya have published a paper that shows that snow acts as a sink for nanosized particles from car exhausts.

Faculty position available in Physical Oceanography

The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at McGill University is seeking outstanding applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to strengthen its component in physical oceanography.
