The Lab

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide effective and efficient access to a broad range of micro- and nano-fabrication tools and expertise. We welcome all research and development initiatives related to micro- and nano-fabrication. Our services and competencies range from basic fabrication services to multistep processes. Our team will be there to assist and guide you from the beginning until the end of your project.

Our goals are:

  • install, repair and maintain all the equipment to provide a reliable access to lab members
  • develop, document and share baseline processes to labmembers and the micro- and nano-technology community
  • act as a bridge for non-tradionnal micro- and nano-fabrication area
  • support and enable research initiatives
  • provide service and expertise to industrial willing to access our facility

Overview

The MNM is 1,000 sq.ft class 100, 1000 cleanroom equipped with 40+ standard semiconductor fabrication tools.

The McGill Nanotools Microfab project was initiated from a CFI grant obtained by a group of researchers at McGill in 2000. Three years later, thanks to the excellent work of our former manager (Vito Logiudice), the MNM was inaugurated and opened to users. Since May 2008, the MNM is managed by Matthieu Nannini and is reaching maturity in terms of equipments and process library. The result is a state of the art tool for nanoscience research at McGill.

In 2008 a 2.3M$ grant was awarded by the MDEIE and McGill University for equipment upgrades and new acquisitions.

Our operations are sustained by the fees collected for fab usage and by McGill university.

Organization

The McGill Nanotools Microfab is ran by 5 full-time staff. 1 manager, 2 process and equipment owners and 1 research assistant. An advisory committee made of 4 faculties is in charge of the overall direction of the lab.
