Alp Bora, B.Eng. 2011
I began my education at McGill University in mechanical engineering but developed an interest in the mining industry in my third year which led to pursuing a minor in mining engineering. The members of the department made me feel as though I was part of the mining “family” from the beginning. McGill’s Department of Mining Engineering helped me to secure my first internship. To ensure that I graduated with solid industry experience, I did a 16-month internship which in hindsight was a great decision and led to my subsequent successful positions over the past 10 years. I have worked for Tata Steel, Vale, and Rio Tinto as an operations and maintenance professional. During the commodity crisis, I moved into consulting with Accenture where I delivered projects for natural resources clients such as BHP, Suncor and Rio Tinto.
In 2021, I launched my consulting firm, Bora Engineering and Consulting Inc. My firm specializes in operational excellence and value creation in heavy industry. 80% of my clients are in the mining industry. Working in the mining industry has been a privilege, and I am very grateful to be a part of it. The mining and metals industry is a cornerstone of our economy and will remain crucial for future generations. I am committed to doing what I can from within the industry to making sustainability integral to the DNA of mining.
