From Saturday, Oct. 5 through Monday, Oct. 7, the Downtown and Macdonald Campuses will be open only to McGill students, employees and essential visitors. Many classes will be held online. Remote work required where possible. See Campus Public Safety website for details.

Charting a New Path along the Environmental Policy Tightrope - Prof. Kai Chan

Professor Kai Chan is standing in front of a railingKai Chan - an interdisciplinary, problem-oriented sustainability scientist trained in ecology, policy, and ethics research - was the first MSSI invited speaker of 2019. His talk proposed a relational value approach, as opposed to command-and-control or market-based approaches, to environmental policy and the valuation of ecosystem services. Prof. Chan is based at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia and was lead author on the 2019 IPBES Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. He leads CHANS lab (Connecting Human and Natural Systems) at UBC and is co-founder of CoSphere (a Community of Small-Planet Heroes).
