Published: 29 July 2019

Two Schulich Early Music graduates, violinist Marie Nadeau-Tremblay (BMus ’14, LMus ’17, MMus '19) and trumpeter Duncan Campbell (BMus ’14, GDip ’17, LMus ’19) were recently awarded first and second prize respectively at the Mathieu Duguay Early Music Competition of the International Lamèque Baroque Music Festival. Both offered stellar performances accompanied by the Mission Saint-Charles Orchestra, conducted by Hank Knox. A little more than 200 music lovers were present for the concert where music from Bach, Vivaldi and Fasch was played.

In addition to winning the top prize of $3000, Marie was awarded the People’s Choice Prize, the Montreal Baroque Festival Prize and the Été musical de Barachois Prize. As winner, she has received invitations to perform in festivals in the summer of 2020, including the Montreal Baroque Festival, the Été musical de Barachois, and the next edition of the International Lamèque Baroque Music Festival. Duncan Campbell was awarded the Founder’s Choice Award on top of this $1500 second prize.

In its fourth edition, the competition aims to encourage young musicians and the development of new talent in the field of early music. Taking place over two rounds, all finalists performed both with basso continuo and with the Mission Saint-Charles Orchestra, in front of a jury comprised of soprano and harpsichordist Dorothéa Ventura, harpsichordist Hank Knox, violinist Olivier Brault, bassoonist Mathieu Lussier, and harpsichordist Francesco Corti.
