I've always come to music as a violinist -- a one-line player in an orchestra or ensemble. Reading was just a means of getting the music into my head and into my fingers, and though I felt like I had a deep understanding of harmony, it was completely instinctual and experiential.

Student Brent Proseus finalist in Ellsworth Smith Solo Competition

Brent Proseus, a second year trumpet Performance Major in the class of Richard Stoelzel has been chosen one of six students to compete this week in the prestigious Ellsworth Smith Solo competition. The competition will be live streamed .  Brent Proseus is also a 2016 International Solo Competition winner and a winner of the McGill Concerto Competition,

MISQA is back at the Schulich School of Music from August 14-27

MISQA (McGill International String Quartet Academy) was founded in 2010 by Mrs. Constance Pathy. Since its inception, Prof. André J. Roy has assumed its leadership as per his position of general & artistic director. Each year, the academy invites the most significant practitioners of the genre to share their experience with and to educate some of the worlds most promising young quartets; four senior quartets and four junior quartets are selected every year.

Schulich Alumni and baroque flutists for the win at the Indianapolis International Baroque Competition!

Schulich School of Music Alumna Alexa Raine-Wright brings home the $10,000 Devonna & Amos Gerber Grand Prize and Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra Prize at the 2016 Indianapolis International Baroque Competition. Vincent Lauzer, Schulich Alumnus also won the Dee Garrett Laureate and Stanley Ritchie Audience Prizes.

In Perfect Harmony

The student musicians in the McGill Symphony Orchestra have easy access to mentors who regularly perform for a world-renowned orchestra. Almost two dozen members of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal teach at McGill’s Schulich School of Music and roughly one-third of the OSM’s musicians are McGill graduates. Clarinettist David Dias da Silva (ArtDip'16) has won the 2016 Prix d'Europe.  Third prize, the Le Prix Québecor  and the Prix Guy Soucie  were awarded to violinist and DMus candidate Elizabeth Skinner (MMus'15).

Ichiro Fujinaga appointed Associate Dean for Research and Administration

Professor Ichiro Fujinaga has been appointed Associate Dean for Research and Administration for 2016-17.  Professor Fujinaga is one of the leading figures worldwide in the fields of Music Information Retrieval and Digital Humanities in Music.  He is also a successful and productive researcher, who has received major grants from many sources, including the US National Endowment for the Humanities and the Mellon Foundation, and Canadian SSHRC, CFI, and FRQSC.

Accolades for McGill Brass at the International Trumpet Guild Convention

The McGill Trumpet Ensemble and professor Richard Stoelzel, Brass Area Chair, recently participated in the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Anaheim, California.  Their prelude concert collegiate performance received astanding ovation.
