“Performing the Nation: Musical Commemoration in Canada, 1967-2017”

My dissertation investigates how orchestras across Canada have framed national holidays (especially Canada Day and Remembrance Day) and significant anniversaries of Canadian confederation from 1967 to the present. In particular, I am interested in how musical commemoration reflects and shapes evolving concepts of nation, identity, and the past. My research interests concern the politics of memory and commemoration, critical theories of violence, and nationalisms in Canada.
