The Schulich School of Music recognises excellence, commitment and innovation on the part of Teaching Assistants and Graduate Instructors, and the important role that they play in the academic experience of undergraduate students in the School.

One prize of $500 will be awarded annually at the Spring convocation.

Eligibility

Nominated candidates must be Teaching Assistants or Graduate Instructors hired by the Schulich School of Music to teach courses in the Schulich School of Music. Candidates must have taught in the 2020-21 academic year. Graduate students can receive only one teaching award per year, and only two (one of each of the two Graduate Student teaching awards) per degree (master’s and doctorate).

A nominee must have demonstrated superior teaching skills and provided superior service to students, beyond his/her duties. Such activities can include:

  • Classroom approaches, assignments, or handouts that greatly enhanced the students’ understanding and appreciation of the subject matter
  • Providing extra help to students outside of class beyond what is required
  • Inspiring students to further continue their studies in the subject at hand
  • Showing great enthusiasm for the subject matter

Nomination Procedure

Undergraduate or Licentiate students of the Schulich School of Music enrolled in a Fall 2020 or Winter 2021 class or section taught by the nominee must submit a completed online nomination form (below) by February 15, 2021.

If multiple students wish to nominate their Teaching Assistant/Graduate Instructor together, they may indicate this on the form. After receiving the nominations, nominees are notified and asked to submit a Statement of Teaching Approach online and a letter of reference from their supervising professor (normally the primary teacher or course coordinator, but it could also be the student's thesis supervisor) by March 5, 2021.
