Dr. Donatella Tampieri is a Professor of Radiology, Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University and is Head of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital. Her major areas of expertise are in Interventional Neuroradiology (endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysm, arterio-venous malformations, dural arterio-venous fistula and pre-operatory embolization of tumours). The treatment of back and cervical spine pain represents also a large component of her activities including nerve and facets block and epidural injections, and vertebroplasty. In Diagnostic Neuroradiology her major expertise is in epilepsy and brain tumours, using fully all the most advanced imaging applications including tractography (DTI). Dr Tampieri practice Neuroradiology in all McGill affiliated teaching Hospitals including the Montreal Children Hospital.
Born in Italy, Dr. Tampieri received her undergraduate degree from the Lycée Scientifique Copernico in Bologna (1976), and her medical degree magna cum laude from the University of Bologna (1982). She completed her residency in Diagnostic Radiology in 1986 in the University of Bologna. Dr. Tampieri worked as neuroradiologist at Niguarda Ca’Granda Hospital from 1984 – 1987. Since 1987 she has been on staff at the Montreal Neurological Hospital and Institute.
Her post-graduate work was undertaken in Bologna as well as at the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm and at McGill University.
Dr. Tampieri has lectured and published widely on virtually all aspects of clinical neuroradiology and on the use of Computer Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and cerebral angiography. Her published works include a total of 158 peer reviewed papers and 20 chapters/books. Dr. Tampieri has particular expertise in brain aneurysms and stroke. Her work has been recognized with awards that include a first prize for a collaborative scientific paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Neuroradiology and she has received the Bernadette Nogradi Prize in 1992. Dr. Tampieri was also awarded the Prix d’Excellence en Innovation des Soins de Santé from La Direction du Développement Professionel Continue (DDPC) of the Fédération des Médecins Spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) in September 2016.
