McGill ranked among world's top 25 universities

Published: 5 November 2004

McGill University is ranked among the world's top 25 universities by the Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings, published today. McGill placed 21st worldwide, after such institutions as Harvard, Oxford and Stanford, and was Canada's top-ranking university. The rankings were based on strengths in teaching, research and international reputation.

"This is excellent and important news for Canada," says McGill Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Heather Munroe-Blum. "This ranking is hard won in a context of very serious worldwide competition for talent and effective resources. We take pride in the achievements of our excellent faculty, staff and students. In order to continue to compete on this world stage, we need to stay the course on effective public investment in talent, research, and in advancing the internationalization of Canada's innovation agenda. These are the next critical steps in ensuring that McGill and other Canadian universities can compete globally and best serve Canadians."

The Times Higher Education Supplement used five measures to determine world university rankings: peer review — a survey of 1,300 academics in 88 countries — citations per faculty member, faculty-to-student ratio, number of international students and percentage of international faculty.

McGill consistently ranks among the top research universities in university ranking services.

Another ranking source, Infosource Inc., named McGill this week as the most research-intensive university in Canada. This standing is based on the sponsored research income per full-time faculty position. Infosource Inc. also ranked McGill as the top university in terms of research publication intensity, which is the number of scientific papers published per faculty member.

"McGill welcomes the recognition as Canada's most research-intensive university. This reflects our commitment to attract and retain the top researchers," concludes Munroe-Blum.

The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) is the UK's most authoritative source of information about higher education. The THES covers policy issues and intellectual developments worldwide through a specialist staff of reporters based throughout the UK, a large number of correspondents around the world, and many contributors from within the academic community.
