The Chair is the chief academic and administrative officer of the department and reports to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
The chair leads the department in:

• promoting excellence in teaching, research and service
• developing a vision that supports the particular goals of the departments and the broader goals of the University
• managing faculty matters, including faculty development, recruitment and evaluation
• counsels faculty on prospects for tenure, promotion and merit salary adjustments and the criteria upon which their performance will be judged
• providing a key communication link between the Dean and departmental faculty
• directing operations as well as short term and long term planning
• managing departmental staff, including development and performance evaluation
• generating reports, including the annual report and data requests
• building strong relationships with other departments and leaders
• representing the interests of the department to audiences both inside and outside the university

Provides administrative support to the Chair with respect to scheduling, and reviewing correspondence

• Coordinates meeting convocations for the various departmental committees
• Assists in the planning, organization and scheduling of departmental events
• Responds to general enquiries and acts as a resource and point person for the Department

Facilitates basic and clinical research activities and oversees departmental communications

• Assists in all aspects of research administration (e.g., grant/manuscript editing, REB applications, updating CVs)
• Assists in all aspects of academic administration (e.g., annual report, teaching surveys, internal awards)
• Organizes and advertises scientific seminars 
• Manages website and social media pages, writes and distributes newsletter
