Overview of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics, McGill University

The Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics, McGill University offers training for 3 Fellows per year at the 2 Institutions constituting the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics : The Montreal Children Hospital and the Shriners Hospital, Canadian Unit in Montreal. The two Hospitals are physically linked on the site of the recently built McGill University Health Center. Between the two hospitals, the Fellows are exposed to a wide variety of orthopaedic conditions in children, both acute and elective. In addition, several members of our division, have an adult practice at the Montreal General Hospital , hence the Fellows are also exposed to the whole gamut of conditions from young age to adulthood. This transition from pediatrics to adulthood is a key feature and strength of our program.

Montreal Children Hospital

  • This is a Level 1 Trauma Center.
  • Daily fracture clinics (about 30 patients a day)
  • Emergency consults covering 24/7
  • Operating rooms twice a week (for complex cases requiring ICU beds and cases requiring complex specialized multidisciplinary care )
  • About 9 000 trauma visits are seen annually
  • About 400 operative cases are performed annually
  • Weekly sports medicine clinic
  • Dedicated plaster room technician
  • Dedicated trauma nurse


Shriners Hospital for Children

  • All elective pediatric orthopaedic cases (about 1400 annually)
  • Two elective operating rooms for orthopaedics daily
  • Outpatient visits (about 23, 000 cases annually)
  • 22 elective pediatric orthopaedic bed unit
  • Pediatric Simulation Center
  • Gait analysis laboratory
  • Large conference room for 220 attendees
  • A whole floor (23,000 square foot) wet lab space for basic science research
  • One full time nurse practitioner and 3 part time


Our Faculty and their Subspeciality Interests

Our Faculty comprises a large group of both Full Time and Part Time Orthopaedic Surgeons, from both McGill University and the University of Montreal. Besides the Staff, Fellows, Residents and medical students participate in the delivery of clinical care.

  • Residents : About 4 – 5 residents a year
  • Medical Students: About 2 students at any one time (McGill University medical students, occasionally from other medical schools).
     

Seven full time staff (with all offices at the Shriners Hospital) constitute the core of our division. All seven Staff have academic appointments in the Department of Pediatric Surgery, McGill University. Each of these 7 staff has a specific expertise in one or more of subspecialities , besides general pediatric orthopaedics and trauma :

  • Dr Jean Ouellet -----Spinal deformities (pediatric and adult)
  • Dr Neil Saran ........Spinal deformities and adolescent hip conditions
  • Dr Thierry Benaroch.... DDH and children hip problems, clubfeet, Cerebral Palsy
  • Dr Reggie Hamdy ……Limb reconstruction (Congenital and acquired) , Skeletal dysplasias, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Arthrogryposis, feet and hip deformities .
  • Dr Chantal Janelle .... Upper Limb congenital and acquired conditions, sports medicine
  • Dr Mitch Bernstein ... Dr Bernstein has combined training as a Paediatric and Adult Surgeons. He is Board certified, FRCSC, FAAOS (US and Canada) and specializes in Adult and Pediatric Orthopaedic Trauma as well as in Adults and Pediatric Limb Lengthening and Complex Extremity Reconstruction.
  • Dr Thierry Pauyo... Pediatric and adolescent Sports medicine for both Upper and lower limbs, adolescent hip conditions
  • All the Staff participate in Trauma coverage 24/7 by taking Trauma calls at the MCH and conducting daily fracture clinics.
